Buying a home is always exciting! This is the time when you dream about putting down roots for yourself and your family. You can picture the family dinners and celebrations and you can finally have that bright purple wall in the kitchen….ok, maybe not that one. If you have young children, this home will also be where you hope to raise your family.
Buying a home with a family in mind is unique. A single person or childless couple might love the excitement of an urban loft community, but it might be difficult to raise children in that environment.
Here are 5 Tips for buying your first family home:
1. Room to Grow Children need space to run around and play. Consider floor plans which offer a “great room” space or “country kitchen” which can provide a spacious gathering space for the family.
2. Safe Environment Both the home and community should be safe for children. Avoid busy streets. Check local crime rates using sites like Megan’s Law and local resources.
3. Schools The schools your children will attend must be one of the main considerations for a new home purchase. Will they attend the local public school system or attend private schools.
4. Family Lifestyle What extra-curricular activities do you and your family enjoy? Biking trails,
ATV trails, Snowmobiling. Shop for a home which offers easy access to these activities. Extra-curricular sports, shopping and recreation enhance your enjoyment.
5. Plan for the Future Remember your family will grow. Even if you don’t plan to have more kids, they will get bigger, and will bring friends home that are bigger as well. When buying a new home, consider how long the home will accommodate a growing family. Will this be a home that suits you for 5 years? 10 years? Or is it large enough to last for 30? Use this information as part of your decision to buy.
